Google export tool
We have been trying to use the Google Earth export tool as a work around for creating shape files to use in our ESRI/GIS software. My GIS department has used Google KMZ and KML files in the past with great success in converting them to an ESRI shape file. They have had problems with the files created by Radio Compass.
It appears the files are not true KMZ/KML and look to be a PNG image. Are there plans to make them true KML's?
Another issue not relating to ESRI, we tried to make a more basic version of our coverage maps using Google instead of ESRI for our command staff to use on fires. It seems that about 40-50% of the time when turning on various coverage layers within Google earth, we get a red square with large red X, or a bad file that Google can't display. If I delete the imported kmz file and reload it into Google, most of the time it shows a valid coverage layer again. Some of the time I have to shut down Google, and then restart, reload the file and then it will work. I have never seen this with any layer I have used in Google, any ideas??

Google Earth KML File:
Can you email me an example of the KML/KMZ type that you are looking for? mick /at/ radiosoft \dot\ /com\. The KML file we create is very basic - RC grabs the image that you are looking at with the coordinates of the bounding box and simply creates an image overlay for Google Earth. If you are looking for something more sophisticated, send over an example and I'll see what the engineers can do. Also - can you list out what layers you want converted to shape files?
As for the RED X in Google Earth - this will come up if Google cannot find the image file associated with the KML file. As of now you must have the KML file and PNG file in the same directory or edit your KML file to tell it where the PNG file is located on your disk. A feature request has been posted to combine the 2 files into 1 so that this issue does not arise in the future.
I have asked the GIS division to provide an example type of KML to send you for some reverse enginering, should have something soon.
