Defaults

This forum ("Defaults") is set up to ask your opinions about how defaults should work in RadioCompass. Generally, there are four categories for Defaults:
1) Changes that are one-time only, like adding a label to a map
2) Changes that are for the duration of one session ("runtime") like moving a window to one corner of your screen
3) Changes that are permanent, like choosing Metric Units each time a new study is begun, and
4) Changes which become part of the user interface, like adding a new menu item, or asking that one menu item always be used first ("by default").

While we've chosen these examples so that they are (hopefully) fairly obvious, things quickly become complex: if I send you one of my studies, should your Program Menus change when viewing my study? What if one of my changes (say, adding a recent city boundary) refers to data you don't have?

How should we identify these four categories? Should there be more of them? For example, #4 could be split, or added to, since we plan to offer entire third-party plug-ins to RadioCompass.
